SARAH DOWLING | Punchdrunk (London, UK)

BODY AS SITE, SITE AS BODY

Week Two: Monday, 1 July - Saturday, 6 July 2024

Take a deep dive into the body as a creative resource.

We will activate the senses, heightening the information we can receive. We will seek impulses from the body, from the space we interact with, and from our fellow performers.

Through contact work, solo improvisation, and group play we will explore skin as walls and walls as skin, eyes as windows, faces as doorways. The delicate and intimate moments of physical expression will be explored as much as the epic. We will work with the notions of close up and long shot. Together we will push into and hopefully beyond what you thought you were capable of.

My practice is hugely informed by 20 years with Punchdrunk. With Punchdrunk we created non verbal worlds stimulated by Macbeth, Faust, Woyzeck, The Trojan War. The body and the site were the primary storytellers, not words. I hope to pass on some of the methods acquired during my time with Punchdrunk and give people a way into seeing the body and space as equal partners in the creative process.

ELLEN LAUREN | SITI Company (New York, USA) + SCOT/Suzuki Company of Toga (Japan)

PRACTICE AND MAKING

Week One: Monday, 24 June - Saturday, 29 June 2024

-

The workshop seeks to bridge the principles of both the Suzuki Method of Actor Training  and  The Viewpoints training, taught in the mornings,  with the practice of making original material in the afternoons. Uniquely identified with SITI Company’s influential contribution to the field, participants are asked to stretch their imaginations while learning fresh skills to rehearse and perform new work in a collaborative setting. Emphasis is placed on understanding a stronger connection between body, breathing and voice, and deepening one’s emotional and intellectual commitment to the creative act.
